“What Is This Bill?”

The meter went backward all afternoon. The bill still isn’t zero.

Previously: The utility swapped the meter for one that counts both directions, closed the disconnect, and left. Doris watched her story while the roof made power. Twenty-six days later, an envelope shows up with a plastic window in it.

Three systems, one pile of cards

Every card is something that happens at a house. Drop it on the system that handles it best. Drag it, or tap the card and then tap a chip.

  • Grid as battery — Bob’s. One-for-one credits from 2018. Time of day is somebody else’s problem until 2032.
  • Resilience — Jane’s. About 22 kWh of storage. She bought it for outages and she’ll tell you so.
  • Load management — Doris’s, and yours. On net billing every kWh used on-site is worth ~21¢; every kWh exported earns ~5¢. That ratio is the whole episode.
  • Illegal drops bounce back and somebody tells you why. 1 PM on a weekday is not available. Ask Doris.
